Four county men can’t get hardball out of their systems

At its highest level, baseball is played by finely tuned athletes in front of thousands of fans for millions of dollars.

But at its heart, it’s a game played by kids in sandlots and neighborhood fields for the joy and love of the game.

Or, in this case, played by “kids at heart.”

Players in the Greater Cleveland Adult Baseball League range from 38 years of age into their mid-60s. They wear full uniforms and have sanctioned umpires officiate their games.

But this isn’t rec-league softball or Little League for seniors. It’s competitive hardball, played with steel spikes and wooden bats. It’s players with high school, college and even some professional experience who still have a desire to slide head first into second base.

“A lot of guys in the league became disenchanted with softball and wanted something more competitive,” Bill Bodnar says. “They find out about this league and all it takes is one game to get them hooked.” more...
